Shane was born and raised in Troy, IL and graduated from Triad High School. At Triad, he was involved in various athlete programs. From football to basketball to baseball, he was consistently busy and always looking forward to the next season. Amongst them all, his true success was in being a running back and kicker for the Triad Knights Football Program. After high school, he went to Missouri Southern State University where he played as their starting kicker and received 2nd Team All Conference. After one season, he transferred to McKendree University where he played running back for their football team and outfield for their baseball team.
In May 2010, Shane graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health & Wellness Promotion. He began his career as a personal trainer at DFM, and now, he has established over 14 years of personal training experience.
After college, Shane was looking for something to have as a competitive outlet. His good friend (and current CrossFit 557 coach) Alan introduced him to CrossFit in the summer of 2010. Shane was immediately hooked. From the beginning of it all, it was a challenge for him. He lacked skill, technique, and form yet wanted to do everything he could to better himself to be the best athlete he could be. Countless hours, brutal workouts, and numerous YouTube videos kept him interested and informed. Shane wanted to learn and experience as much as possible to help get him to the next level.
Since January 2011, Shane has had the honor to train other people in CrossFit. In January 2014, his dream of one day owning his own CrossFit box finally came true. CrossFit 557 has helped him become a better coach, athlete, and overall person. Shane is truly blessed and honored to be a part of this amazing community.

Alan Knabe
Coach - CrossFit Level I
Alan grew up in Troy, IL and graduated from Triad High School. During that time he was involved in football, track and field, and wrestling. After high school, he went and played college football at Illinois College. While he was at IC he decided to join the military. He served 7 years in the Air National Guard as a firefighter, and did 2 deployments. He also served a few years as a civilian firefighter out of Topeka, KS.
The passion for exercise and fitness has always been associated with Alan. During all the years of football, military training, and fire training, he always had to stay in good physical shape. During one of the deployments he walked into a fire house gym and saw a guy, much bigger than him, doing a muscle-up. His interest was peaked and asked what he was doing. CrossFit took over from there. Since 2008, he has been doing CrossFit and has years of experience in power lifting and olympic lifting. He enjoys coaching, helping, and sharing his passion for CrossFit.
Alan has 3 beautiful daughters, Kenley, Kallie, and Stevie. Outside of coaching he enjoys spending time with them.
For 7 years he served his country and people as a military member and firefighter, and now it's time to help serve people of this community with his knowledge of those fields combined.

Crystal Gedris
Coach - CrossFit Level 3
Crystal grew up in O’Fallon, IL and graduated from O’Fallon Township High School. At OTHS, she was involved in soccer, cross country and track. After high school, she went to St. Louis College of Pharmacy where she continued cross country for 4 more years. In 2008, she earned a Doctorate of Pharmacy and worked as a pharmacist and pharmacy manager with a local retailer for 15 years. After college, Crystal struggled to find a fitness routine she enjoyed and always went back to running. After finishing a half marathon in 2013, a friend recommended she try CrossFit and she fell in love with this workout regimen.
After 3 years of doing CrossFit, Crystal realized how beneficial it would have been when she was an athlete in high school and college. She decided to take the CrossFit Level 1 Certification so she could not only coach adults, but also coach athletes. In 2016, while working as a full time pharmacist, Crystal began her coaching journey in her spare time. She has had the pleasure of coaching all levels and ages of CrossFitters (from 3 years old to 70+ years old).
Her passion for coaching has continued to grow with each chapter of her life and she is always learning and expanding her knowledge. She is a mom of 2 wonderful kids and continued CrossFit during both pregnancies. Going through this journey without much knowledge at the time of her first pregnancy, she developed a passion for helping other women safely continue CrossFit (and fitness in general) while pregnant and postpartum. She has helped over 10 women (pregnant, newly postpartum, several years postpartum) at CrossFit 557 in the last 2 years.
Crystal came to CrossFit 557 in 2018 as a member and has since become one of our head coaches and manager. What keeps her passion alive is seeing kids/teens/adults do things they never thought possible and knowing she was part of that journey!

John Schaeffer
Coach -CrossFit Level I
John grew up in Collinsville, IL and graduated from Collinsville High School. He enjoyed playing basketball and baseball growing up. Aside from coaching, he works as an Operating Engineer Local 520 for the City of Collinsville.
John started CrossFit in 2013. He had been running to get healthier, but his wife and a few of her friends had been doing CrossFit for a year. They challenged John to try it, so he did and he hasn’t turned back since. John has been a member of CrossFit 557 since 2021 and became one of our coaches in 2022.
